Security

-Lock and Keys
What if I am locked out of my apartment?
During business hours you can call or stop by the business center. After business hours, you will need to contact a local locksmith.
What if a door to the bedroom or bathroom locks accidentally?
A key to open a bathroom or bedroom door is typically located at the top of the doorframe. New locks require you to push the key straight into the center of the outside door handle. The lock will pop open and you should be able to hear it click. On older locks, push the key straight into the doorknob and turn slowly until the flat head screw lines up with the key, and then turn the key to turn the interior lock into the open position.

Locks on interior doors may be either push-button type or turn type.

Push Button: Insert a toothpick or the end of a paperclip into the hole on the knob and gently push to unlock the door.

Turn Lock: Use your fingernail, a coin or small flat blade screwdriver to gently turn the small slotted tab on the knob to the left or right.

What is my role in safety?
We all share in keeping our community safe. Please note grills are only allowed in designated areas, not on patios or balconies.
• Please be certain to dispose of cigarette butts in appropriate receptacles.
• For your protection, TRG Property Management Company requires all residents to carry valid renters insurance.

Bathroom

How do I stop a toilet from running continuously?
Turn water supply valve behind the toilet clockwise to turn water off. Place a service request online via our online resident portal or contact the business center.

What should I do if my toilet becomes clogged?
Make certain the toilet bowl water is at half full. Place toilet plunger into the bowl, covering the throat of the toilet completely and push up and down several times. Once cleared, the water should drain out of the bowl. Flush the toilet bowl and repeat previous steps if needed.

Power

What if power goes out in a section of my apartment?
Check the breaker panel, typically located in the hallway or behind a bedroom door. This rectangular box contains a series of black switches, often labeled inside the panel door or next to the switch. Breakers should all be facing the same direction. If the breaker is tripped, it will be positioned between the on and off position. Push the tripped breaker all the way to the off position and then back to the on position to correct. If the circuit breaker does not reset, or trips again, place a request for service online or contact the business center.

APARTMENT APPLIANCES

-Air Conditioning

What if my A/C is not heating or cooling?
Make certain that your thermostat is set to“auto” on either “cool” or “heat.” If the fan does not come on, check the circuit breaker and make certain it’s in the “ON” position.

-DISHWASHER

Clean and Care
How do I clean my dishwasher?
Clean the exterior of the dishwasher with a soft, damp cloth and mild detergent. If your dishwasher has a stainless steel exterior, a stainless steel cleaner is recommended – Stainless Steel Cleaner and Polish Part Number 31464.

Clean the interior of the dishwasher, with a paste of powdered dishwasher detergent and water or use liquid dishwasher detergent on a damp sponge to clean the cooled-down interior.

A white vinegar rinse may remove white spots and film. Vinegar is an acid, and using it too often could damage your dishwasher.

Put 2 cups (500 mL) white vinegar in a glass or dishwasher-safe measuring cup on the bottom rack. Run the dishwasher through a complete washing cycle using an air-dry or an energy-saving dry option. Do not use detergent. Vinegar will mix with the wash water.

If you have a drain air gap, check and clean it if the dishwasher isn’t draining well.

How do I clean the filters in my dishwasher?
For best performance and results, the filter assembly must be cleaned regularly. The filter efficiently removes food particles from the wash water, allowing water to recirculate during the cycle. For this reason, it is a good idea to remove the large food particles trapped in the filter frequently by rinsing the Main filter, metal strainer and Fine filter under running water. The entire filter assembly should be cleaned at least once a month

1) Remove the filter assembly by turning the Main filter 1⁄4 turn counterclockwise. Lift to remove.

2) Clean the Main filter and Fine filter using a cleaning brush.

3) Reassemble the filter parts as shown in the illustration.

4) Reinsert the entire filter assembly in the dishwasher, positioning it in place.

5) Turn the Main filter 1⁄4 turn clockwise to secure in place.

Problem Solving
What do I do if my dishwasher is not operating properly ?
  • Is the door closed tightly and latched?
  • Is the right cycle selected?
  • Is the START/RESUME light on? Press START/RESUME.
  • Is there power to the dishwasher? Has a household fuse blown, or has a circuit breaker tripped? Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker. If the problem continues, call an electrician.
  • Has the motor stopped due to an overload? The motor automatically resets itself within a few minutes. If it does not restart, call for service.
  • Is the water shutoff valve (if installed) turned on?
  • Is the detergent lump-free? Replace detergent if necessary.
  • White residue on the front of the access panel Was too much detergent used?
  • Is the brand of detergent making excess foam? Try a different brand to reduce foaming and eliminate buildup.
  • Are dishes washed only every 2 or 3 days? Run a rinse cycle once or twice a day until you have a full load.
  • Does the dishwasher have a new plastic smell? Run a vinegar rinse as described in “Dishwasher Care.”
  • Condensation on the kitchen counter (built-in models)
  • Is the dishwasher aligned with the countertop? Moisture from the vent in the dishwasher console can form on the counter. Refer to the Installation Instructions for more information.
What if my dishes don't dry completely?
Did you use a rinse aid? Your dishwasher is designed to use rinse aid for good drying performance. Without rinse aid your dishes and dishwasher interior will have excessive moisture. The heat dry option will not perform as well without rinse aid.

Did you load your dishwasher to allow proper water drainage? Do not overload. Use a liquid rinse aid to speed drying. Are the plastics wet? Plastics often need towel drying. Is the rinse aid dispenser empty? Did you use an air-dry or energy-saving dry option? Use a heated drying option for dryer dishes.

What if there is excess moisture on racks and dishwasher interior?
Check the rinse aid indicator to see that there is rinse aid in the dispenser.
What if there are spots and stains on freshly cleaned dishes?
Is your water hard, or is there a high mineral content in your water? Conditioning the final rinse water with a liquid rinse aid helps eliminate spotting and filming. Keep the rinse aid dispenser filled. Always use a high-temp option. If your water hardness is 13 grains or above, it is strongly recommended that you install a home water softener. If you do not wish to drink softened water, have the softener installed onto your hot water supply.

Is the water temperature too low? For best dishwashing results, water should be 120°F (49°C) as it enters the dishwasher.

Did you use the correct amount of effective detergent? Use recommended dishwasher detergents only. Do not use less than 1 tbs (15 g) per load. Detergent must be fresh to be effective. Heavy soil and/or hard water generally require extra detergent.

Is the home water pressure high enough for proper dishwasher filling? Home water pressure should be 20 to 120 psi (138 to 828 kPa) for proper dishwasher fill. If you have questions about your water pressure, call a licensed, qualified plumber.

NOTE: To remove spots and film from glassware, remove all silverware and metal items and run a vinegar rinse as described in “Dishwasher Care.”

What if there is silica or etching (silica film is a milky, rainbow-colored deposit; etching is a cloudy film)?
Sometimes there is a water/chemical reaction with certain types of glassware. This is usually caused by some combination of soft or softened water, alkaline washing solutions, insufficient rinsing, overloading the dishwasher, and the heat of drying. It might not be possible to avoid the problem, except by hand washing. To slow this process use a minimum amount of detergent but not less than 1 tbs (15 g) per load. Use a liquid rinse aid and underload the dishwasher to allow thorough rinsing. Silica film and etching are permanent and cannot be removed. Do not use heated drying.
What if there are white spots on cookware with non-stick finish?
Has the dishwasher detergent removed cookware seasoning? Reseason cookware after washing it in the dishwasher.
What if there are brown stains on dishes and dishwasher interior?
Does your water have high iron content? Rewash dishes using 1-3 tsp (5-15 mL) of citric acid crystals added to the covered section of the detergent dispenser. Do not use detergent. Follow with a Normal wash cycle with detergent. If treatment is needed more often than every other month, the installation of an iron removal unit is suggested.

What if there are black or grey marks on dishes?
Are aluminum items rubbing dishes during washing? Disposable aluminum items can break down in the dishwasher and cause marking. Hand wash these items. Remove aluminum markings by using a mild abrasive cleaner.
What if there are orange stains on plastic dishwater or dishwasher interior?
Are large amounts of tomato-based foods on dishes placed in the dishwasher? It may be necessary to use a stain removal product to remove stains from your dishwasher. Stains will not affect dishwasher performance.
What if the dishwasher is making unusual noises (Grinding, grating, crunching, or buzzing)?
A hard object has entered the wash module (on some models). When the object is ground up, the sound should stop. If the noise persists after a complete cycle, call for service.
What if dishes are damaged during cycle?
Did you load the dishwasher properly? Load the dishes and glasses so they are stable and do not strike together from washing action. Minimize chipping by moving the rack in and out slowly.

NOTE: Antiques, feather-edged crystal, and similar types of china and glassware might be too delicate for automatic dishwashing. Wash by hand.

-WATER HEATER

Cleaning and Care
What to do if I have to drain the water heater?

CAUTION: Shut off power to the water heater before draining water.

DANGER: Before manually operating the relief valve, make certain no one will be exposed to the hot water released by the valve. The water drained from the tank may be hot enough to present a scald hazard and should be directed to a suitable drain to prevent injury or damage.

In order to drain the water heater, turn off the cold water supply. Open a hot water faucet or lift the handle on the relief valve to admit air to the tank.

Attach a garden hose to the drain valve on the water heater and direct the stream of water to a drain. Open the valve.

Routine Preventative Maintenance
DANGER: Before manually operating the relief valve, make certain no one will be exposed to the danger of coming in contact with the hot water released by the valve. The water may be hot enough to create a scald hazard. The water should be released into a suitable drain to prevent injury or property damage.

NOTICE: If the temperature and pressure relief valve on the hot water heater discharges periodically, this may be due to thermal expansion in a closed water system.

Contact the water supplier or your plumbing contractor on how to correct this. Do not plug the relief valve outlet.

It is suggested that a routine preventive maintenance program be established and followed by the user.

It is further recommended that a periodic inspection of the operating controls, heating element and wiring should be made by service personnel qualified in electric appliance repair.

Most electrical appliances, even when new, make some sound when in operation. If the hissing or singing sound level increases excessively, the electric heating element may require cleaning. Contact a qualified installer or plumbing contract to inspect.

At least once a year, lift and release the lever handle on the temperature pressure relief valve, located near the top of the water heater, to make certain the valve operates freely. Allow several gallons to flush through the discharge line to an open drain.

A water heater’s tank can act as a setting basin for solids suspended in the water. It is therefore not uncommon for hard water deposits to accumulate in the bottom of the tank. It is suggested that a few quarts of water be drained from the water heater’s tank every month to clean the tank of these deposits.

Rapid closing of faucets or solenoid valves in automatic water using appliances can cause a banging noise heard in a
water pipe. Strategically located risers in the water pipe system or water hammer arresting devices can be used to minimize the problem.

The anode rod should be removed from the water heater’s tank annually for inspection and replaced when more than 6′′ of core wire is exposed at either end of the rod.

Make sure the cold water supply is turned off before removing anode rod.

Extended Shut-Down
If the water heater is to remain idle for an extended period of time, the power and water to the appliance should be turned off to conserve energy and prevent a build-up of dangerous hydrogen gas.

The water heater and piping should be drained if they might be subjected to freezing temperatures.

What to do about the Anode Rod?
This water heater is equipped with an anode rod designed to prolong the life
of the glass lined tank. The anode rod is slowly consumed, thereby eliminating or minimizing corrosion of the glass lined tank.

After a long shut-down period, the
water heater’s operation and controls should be checked by qualified service personnel. Make certain the water heater is completely filled again before placing it in operation.

Water sometimes contains a high sulfate and/or mineral content and together with cathodic protection process can produce
a hydrogen sulfide, or rotten egg odor in the heated water. Chlorination of the water supply should minimize the problem.

NOTICE: DO NOT remove the anode rod from the water heater’s tank,
except for inspection and/or replacement, as operation with the anode rod removed will greatly shorten the life of the glass lined tank and will exclude warranty coverage.

Problem Solving

-REFRIGERATOR

Clean and Care
What to do when I have to clean my refrigerator?
NOTE: Do not use abrasive or harsh cleaners such as window

sprays, scouring cleansers, flammable fluids, cleaning waxes, concentrated detergents, bleaches or cleansers containing petroleum products on plastic parts, interior and door liners or gaskets. Do not use paper towels, scouring pads, or other harsh cleaning tools.

  1. Unplug refrigerator or disconnect power.
  2. Hand wash, rinse, and dry removable parts and interior surfaces thoroughly. Use a clean sponge or soft cloth and a mild detergent in warm water.
  3. Wash stainless steel and painted metal exteriors with a clean sponge or soft cloth and a mild detergent in warm water.
  4. There is no need for routine condenser cleaning in normal home operating environments. If the environment is particularly greasy or dusty, or there is significant pet traffic in the home, the condenser should be cleaned every 2 to 3 months to ensure maximum efficiency.

If you need to clean the condenser:

  • Remove the base grille. See the “Door Removal” instructions, either in the User Instructions or the Installation Instructions and Owner’s Manual, or in the separate instruction sheet provided with your refrigerator.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush to clean the grille, the open areas behind the grille and the front surface area of the condenser.
  • Replace the base grille when finished.

           5. Plug in refrigerator or reconnect power.

Problem Solving
What if my refrigerator is not operating properly?

■ Not connected to an electrical supply – Plug the power cord into a grounded 3 prong outlet. Do not use an extension cord.

■ No power to the electrical outlet – Plug in a lamp to see if the outlet is working.

■ Household fuse has blown or circuit breaker has tripped – Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker. If the problem continues, contact a licensed electrician.

■ Control or cooling is not turned on – Turn on the refrigerator control, or turn cooling on. See “Using the Controls.”

■ New installation – Following installation, allow 24 hours for the refrigerator and freezer to cool completely.

NOTE: Adjusting the temperature control(s) to the coldest setting will not cool either compartment (refrigerator or freezer) more quickly.

What if the motor seems to run to much?
  • Your new refrigerator has an energy-efficient motor – The refrigerator may run longer than you’re used to, because the compressor and fans operate at lower speeds that are more energy-efficient. This is normal.
  • NOTE: Your refrigerator may run even longer if the room is warm, a large load of food is added, the doors are opened often, or if a door has been left open.
What if my refrigerator seems noisy?
The compressor in your new refrigerator regulates temperature more efficiently and uses less energy than older models. During various stages of operation, you may hear normal operating sounds that are unfamiliar.

The following noises are normal:

  • Buzzing/Clicking – Heard when the water valve opens and closes to dispense water or fill the ice maker. If the refrigerator is connected to a water line, this is normal. If the refrigerator is not connected to a water line, turn off the ice maker.
  • Cracking/Crashing – Heard when ice is ejected from the ice maker mold.
  • Popping – Heard when the inside walls contract/expand, especially during initial cooldown.
  • Pulsating/Whirring – Heard when the fans/compressor adjust to optimize performance during normal operation.
  • Rattling – Heard when water passes through the water line, or due to the flow of refrigerant. Rattling may also come from items placed on top of the refrigerator.
  • Water running or gurgling – Heard when ice melts during the defrost cycle and water runs into the drain pan.
  • Sizzling – Heard when water drips onto the heater during the defrost cycle.
What if the temperature is too warm?
New installation – Following installation, allow 24 hours for the refrigerator and freezer to cool completely.

NOTE: Adjusting the temperature control(s) to the coldest setting will not cool either compartment (refrigerator or freezer) more quickly.

■ Doors are opened often or not closed completely – This allows warm air to enter the refrigerator. Minimize door openings, keep the doors fully closed, and make sure both doors are properly sealed.

■ Air vents are blocked – Remove items that are immediately in front of the vents.

■ Large amount of warm food recently added – Allow several hours for the refrigerator to return

to its normal temperature.

■ Controls are not set correctly for the surrounding conditions – Adjust the controls to a colder setting. Check the temperature again in 24 hours.

What if the temperature is too cold?
Controls are not set correctly for the surrounding conditions – Adjust the controls to a warmer setting. Check the temperature again in 24 hours.

■ Top refrigerator shelf is colder than lower shelves – On some models, air from the freezer enters the refrigerator compartment through vents near the top refrigerator shelf. As a result, the top shelf can be slightly colder than lower shelves.

■ Air vents are blocked – Remove items that are immediately in front of the vents.

What if there is interior moisture buildup?
NOTE: Some moisture buildup is normal. Clean with a soft dry cloth.

■ Room is humid – A humid environment contributes to moisture buildup. Only use the refrigerator in an indoor location, with as little humidity as possible.

■ Doors are opened often or not closed completely – This allows humid air to enter the refrigerator. Minimize door openings, keep the doors fully closed, and make sure both doors are properly sealed.

What if interior lights do not work?
  • Doors have been open for an extended period of time – Close the doors to reset the lights
  •  Light bulb is loose in the socket or has burned out – On models with incandescent interior
  • light bulbs, tighten or replace the bulb. See “Lights.”

NOTE: On models with LED lights, call for assistance or service if the interior lights do not illuminate when either door is opened. See either the front cover or the Warranty for contact information.

What if the dispenser lights do not work?

■ Dispenser light is turned off – On some models, if the dispenser light is set to OFF, the light will turn on only when a dispenser pad/lever is pressed. If you want the dispenser light to stay on continuously, select a different setting. See “Water and Ice Dispensers.”

■ Dispenser light is set to AUTO or NIGHT LIGHT – On some models, if the dispenser light is set to AUTO or NIGHT LIGHT, make sure the dispenser light sensor is not blocked. See “Water and Ice Dispensers.”

NOTE: On models with LED lights, call for assistance or service if the dispenser lights do not operate correctly. See either the front cover or the Warranty for contact information.

What if the doors are difficult to open?

■ Gaskets are dirty or sticky – Clean the gaskets and contact surfaces with mild soap and warm

water. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

What if the doors won't close completely?

■ Doors need to be aligned, or refrigerator needs to be leveled – See the leveling and door alignment instructions.

What if the refrigerator rocks and is not stable?

■ Refrigerator is not level – To stabilize the refrigerator, remove the base grille and lower the leveling feet until they touch the floor. See the leveling and door alignment instructions

What if the ice maker is not producing ice, not producing enough ice, or producing small/hollow ice?

■ Refrigerator is not connected to a water supply, or the water supply shutoff valve is not fully turned on – Connect the refrigerator to a water supply and make sure the water shutoff valve is fully open.

■ Kink in the water source line – A kink in the water line can reduce water flow, resulting in decreased ice production, small ice cubes, and/or hollow or irregularly-shaped ice. Straighten the water line.

■ Ice maker is not turned on – Turn on the ice maker. See “Ice Maker and Storage Bin.”

■ New installation – After connecting the refrigerator to a water source, flush the water system.

(See “Water and Ice Dispensers.”) Wait 24 hours for ice production to begin. Wait 72 hours for full ice production. Discard the first three batches of ice produced.

■ Large amount of ice was recently removed – Allow sufficient time for the ice maker to produce more ice.

■ Ice is jammed in the ice maker ejector arm – Remove ice from the ejector arm using a plastic utensil. ■ Inadequate water pressure – Verify that the household has adequate water pressure. See “Water

Supply Requirements.”

■ Water filter is installed incorrectly – Make sure the filter is properly installed. See “Water Filtration System.”

■ A reverse osmosis water filtration system is connected to your cold water supply – This can decrease water pressure. See “Water Supply Requirements.”

NOTE: If questions remain regarding water pressure, contact a licensed, qualified plumber

What if the ice dispenser will not operate properly?

■ Doors not closed completely – Make sure both doors are firmly closed. (On some models, only the freezer door must be closed in order to operate the dispenser.)

■ New installation – After connecting the refrigerator to a water source, flush the water system.

(See “Water and Ice Dispensers.”) Wait 24 hours for ice production to begin. Wait 72 hours for full ice production. Discard the first three batches of ice produced.

■ Ice maker is not turned on, or ice bin is not installed correctly – Turn on the ice maker and make sure the ice storage bin is firmly in position. See “Ice Maker and Storage Bin.”

■ Ice is clogged or frozen together in the ice storage bin, or ice is blocking the ice delivery chute – Remove or separate the clogged ice, using a plastic utensil if necessary. Clean the ice delivery chute and the bottom of the ice storage bin using a warm damp cloth, then dry both thoroughly. To avoid clogging and to maintain a fresh supply of ice, empty the storage bin and clean both the storage bin and the delivery chute every 2 weeks.

■ Wrong ice has been added to the storage bin – Use only ice cubes produced by the current ice maker.

■ Dispenser is locked – Unlock the dispenser. See “Water and Ice Dispensers.”

■ Ice dispenser jams while dispensing crushed ice – For models with the ice storage bin on the door, temporarily switch from crushed ice to cubed ice to clear the jam.

■ Dispenser pad/lever has been pressed too long – Ice will automatically stop dispensing. Wait a few minutes for the dispenser to reset, then resume dispensing. Take large amounts of ice directly from the ice bin, not through the dispenser.

■ Water pressure to the home is not at or above 30 psi (207 kPa) – The water pressure to the home affects the flow from the dispenser. See “Water Supply Requirements.”

■ Water filter is clogged or incorrectly installed – Replace filter or reinstall it correctly. See “Water Filtration System.”

What if the ice or water has an off taste, odor, or grey color?

■ New plumbing connections – New plumbing connections can result in off-flavored or discolored ice or water. This problem should go away over time.

■ Ice has been stored too long – Discard the ice and wash the ice bin. Allow 24 hours for the ice maker to produce new ice.

■ Odor has transferred from food – Use airtight moisture-proof packaging to store food.

■ Use of non-recommended water supply line – Odors and tastes can transfer from certain materials used in non-recommended water supply lines. Use only a recommended water supply line. See “Water Supply Requirements.”

■ There are minerals (such as sulfur) in the water – A water filter may need to be installed in order to remove the minerals.

■ Water filter was recently installed or replaced – Gray or dark discoloration in ice or water indicates that the water filtration system needs additional flushing. See “Water and Ice Dispensers.”

What if the water dispenser is not working properly?

■ Doors not closed completely – Make sure both doors are firmly closed. (On some models, only the freezer door must be closed in order to operate the dispenser.)

■ Refrigerator is not connected to a water supply, or the water supply shutoff valve is not turned on – Connect the refrigerator to a water supply and make sure the water shutoff valve is fully open.

■ Kink in the water source line – A kink in the water line can reduce water flow to the dispenser. Straighten the water line.

■ Water pressure to the home is not at or above 30 psi (207 kPa) – The water pressure to the home affects the flow from the dispenser. See “Water Supply Requirements.”

■ New installation – After connecting the refrigerator to a water source, flush the water system. See “Water and Ice Dispensers.”

■ Dispenser is locked – Unlock the dispenser. See “Water and Ice Dispensers.”

■ Water filter is clogged or incorrectly installed – Replace filter or reinstall it correctly. See “Water Filtration System.”

■ A reverse osmosis water filtration system is connected to your cold water supply – This can decrease water pressure. See “Water Supply Requirements.”

NOTE: If questions remain regarding water pressure, contact a licensed, qualified plumber.

What if water is leaking or dripping from the dispenser?
NOTE: After dispensing, a few additional drops of water are normal.

■ Glass was not held under the dispenser long enough – Hold the glass under the dispenser for 2 to 3 seconds after releasing the dispenser pad/lever.

■ New installation, or water filter was recently installed or replaced – Air in the water lines causes the water dispenser to drip. Flush the water system to remove the air in the water lines. See “Water and Ice Dispensers.”

■ Residual ice in the dispenser chute is melting – Make sure the ice chute is free of ice shavings or pieces.

What if water is leaking from the back of the refrigerator?

■ Water line connections are not fully tightened – Make sure all connections are firmly tightened. See “Connect Water Supply.”

What if the water from the dispenser is not cool enough?
NOTE: Water from the dispenser is chilled to 50°F (10°C).

  • New installation – Allow 24 hours after installation for the water supply to cool completely.
  • Recently dispensed a large amount of water – Allow 24 hours for the new water supply to cool completely.
  • Water has not been recently dispensed – The first glass of water may not be cool. Discard the first glass of water dispensed.
  • Refrigerator is not connected to a cold water pipe – Make sure the refrigerator is connected to a cold water pipe. See “Water Supply Requirements.”

-Microwave Oven

Clean and Care
What if I have to clean my microwave?
IMPORTANT: Before cleaning, make sure all controls are off and the microwave oven is cool. Always follow label instructions on cleaning products.

To avoid damage to the microwave oven caused by arcing due to soil buildup, keep cavity, microwave inlet cover, cooking rack supports, and area where the door touches the frame clean.

Clean with mild soap, water, and a soft cloth or sponge or as indicated below.

  • Nonstick cavity coating (on some models): To avoid damage to the microwave oven cavity, do not use metal or sharp utensils or scrapers or any type of abrasive cleanser or scrubbers.
  • Grease filter: mild soap and water or dishwasher.
  • Door and exterior: mild soap and water, or glass cleaner
  • applied to paper towel.
  • Control panel: sponge or soft cloth and water.
  • Stainless steel (on some models): mild soap and water, then rinse with clean water and dry with soft cloth, or use stainless steel cleaner.
  • Turntable: mild soap and water or dishwasher.
  • Rack(s): mild soap, water, and washcloth. Dishwasher cleaning is not recommended.
What if I have to install/replace filters and light bulbs?
NOTE: A filter status indicator (on some models) appears in the display when it is time to replace the charcoal filter, and clean or replace the grease filters. See “Settings” section to reset filter status.

  • Grease filters: Grease filters are on the underside of microwave oven. Clean monthly or as prompted by filter status indicator. Slide the filter away from the tab area, and drop out the filter. To reinstall, place end of the filter into the opening opposite the tab area, swing up the other end, and slide it toward the tab area.
  • Charcoal filter: The charcoal filter is behind the vent grille at the top front of the microwave oven. The charcoal filter cannot be cleaned and should be replaced about every 6 months, or as prompted by filter status indicator. Remove two screws on the vent grille, tilt the grille forward, lift it out, and remove filter. To reinstall, place the filter into its slotted area – wire mesh side up, replace vent grille, and secure with screws.
  • Cooktop light: The cooktop light is located on the underside of the microwave oven and is replaceable. Remove bulb cover screw, and open the bulb cover. Replace bulb, close bulb cover, and secure with screw.
  • Cavity light: The cavity light bulb is located behind the vent grille at the top front of the microwave oven, under the bulb cover, and is replaceable. Remove two screws on the vent grille, tilt the grille forward, and lift it out. Open bulb cover and replace bulb. Close bulb cover, replace vent grille, and secure with screws.
Problem Solving
What if microwave oven won't operate?
  • Household fuse or circuit breaker – If a household fuse has blown or a circuit breaker has tripped,
  • replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker. If the problem continues, call an electrician.
  • Magnetron – Try to heat 1 cup (250 mL) of cold water for 2 minutes at 100% cooking power. If water does not heat, try the steps in the bullets below. If microwave oven still does not operate, call for service.
  • Door – Firmly close door. On some models, if a packaging spacer is attached to inside of the door, remove it, then firmly close door.
  • If a message about the door appears in the display, the door has been closed for 5 minutes or more without the microwave oven being started. This occurs to avoid unintended starting of the microwave oven. Open and close the door, then start the cycle.
  • Control – Make sure control is set properly. Make sure Control Lock is off. Make sure Demo mode (on some models) is off.
What if there is arcing in the microwave?

Soil buildup – Soil buildup on cavity walls, microwave inlet cover, cooking rack supports, and area where the door touches the frame can cause arcing. See “General Cleaning” in “Microwave Oven Care” section.

What if the turntable alternates rotation directions?

■ This is normal and depends on motor rotation at the beginning of the cycle.

What if displays show messages?
  • “Enter clock” with flashing digits means there has been a power failure. Reset the clock.
  • A letter followed by a number is an error indicator. Call for assistance.

-Dryer

Clean and Care
Cleaning the Dryer
  • Keep washer/dryer area clear and free from items that would obstruct the flow of combustion and ventilation air.
What if I have to clean the lint screen?

Clean the lint screen before each load. A screen blocked by lint can increase drying time.IMPORTANT:

  • Do not run the dryer with the lint screen loose, damaged, blocked, or missing. Doing so can cause overheating and damage to both the dryer and fabrics.
  • If lint falls off the screen into the dryer during removal, check the exhaust hood and remove the lint.
  • Every Load Cleaning Style 1:
  • 1. The lint screen is located inside the dryer on the back wall. Pull out the lint screen and its cover.
  • 2. Separate the cover and the screen by squeezing the screen and pulling on the cover at the same time.
  • 3. Roll lint off the screen with your fingers. Do not rinse or wash screen to remove lint. Wet lint is hard to remove.
  • 4. Put the lint screen and cover back together and push firmly back into place.
  • Style 2:
  • 1. The lint screen is located inside the dryer in the front door well.
  • Pull the lint screen straight up.
  • 2. Roll lint off the screen with your fingers. Do not rinse or wash screen to remove lint. Wet lint is hard to remove.
  • 3. Push the lint screen firmly back into place.
As needed cleaning?
  • Laundry detergent and fabric softener residue can build up on the lint screen. This buildup can cause longer drying times for your clothes, or cause the dryer to stop before your load is completely dry. The screen is probably clogged if lint falls off the screen.
  • Clean the lint screen (as outlined following) every 6 months, or more frequently if it becomes clogged due to a residue buildup.
    1. Roll lint off the screen with your fingers.
    2. Wet both sides of lint screen with hot water.
    3. Wet a nylon brush with hot water and liquid detergent. Scrub lint screen with the brush to remove residue buildup.
    4. Rinse screen with hot water.
    5. Thoroughly dry lint screen with a clean towel. Replace screen in dryer.
What if I have to clean the dryer interior?
  1. Apply a non flammable household cleaner to the stained area of the drum and rub with a soft cloth until stain is removed.
  2. Wipe drum thoroughly with a damp cloth.
  3. Tumble a load of clean cloths or towels to dry the drum.
  • NOTE: Garments that contain unstable dyes, such as denim blue jeans or brightly colored cotton items, may discolor the dryer interior. These stains are not harmful to your dryer and will not stain future loads of clothes. Dry unstable dye items inside out to avoid transfer of dye.
How to move accumulated lint?

From Inside the Dryer Cabinet

-Lint should be removed every 2 years, or more often, depending on dryer usage. Cleaning should be done by a qualified person.

From Inside the Exhaust Vent

-Lint should be removed every 2 years, or more often, depending on dryer usage.

Problem Solving
What if dryer isn't running?
  • Has a household fuse blown, or has a circuit breaker tripped? There may be 2 fuses or circuit breakers for the dryer. Check that both fuses are intact and tight, or that both circuit breakers have not tripped. Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker. If the problem continues, call an electrician.
  • Is the correct power supply available? Electric dryers require 240 volt power supply. Check with a qualified electrician.
  • Was a regular fuse used? Use a time-delay fuse.
  • Is the dryer door firmly closed?
  • Was the PUSH TO START dryer button firmly pressed?
What if my dryer has no heat?
  • Has a household fuse blown, or has a circuit breaker tripped? The drum may be turning, but you may not have heat. Electric dryers use 2 fuses or circuit breakers. Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker. If a problem continues, call an electrician.
  • For gas dryers, is the valve open on the supply line?
What if my dryer is making unusual sounds?
  • Has the dryer had a period of non-use? If the dryer hasn’t been used for a while, there may be a thumping sound during the first few minutes of operation.
  • Is a coin, button, or paper clip caught between the drum and front or rear of the dryer? Check the front and rear edges of the drum for small objects. Clean out pockets before laundering.
  • Is it a gas dryer? The gas valve clicking is a normal operating sound.
  • Are the four legs installed, and is the dryer level front to back and side to side? The dryer may vibrate if not properly installed. See the Installation Instructions.
  • Is the clothing knotted, or balled up? When balled up, the load will bounce, causing the dryer to vibrate. Separate the load items and restart the dryer.
What if the timer does not noticeably advance?

Is the dryer set to Timed or Air Dry? The timer moves slowly and continuously for the timed setting.

Is the dryer set to Automatic Drying? The timer moves only when the clothing is mostly dry.

What if my cloths are not drying satisfactorily, drying times are too long, or load is too hot?
  • Is the lint screen clogged with lint? Lint screen should be cleaned before each load.
  • Is the exhaust vent or outside exhaust hood clogged with lint, restricting air movement? Run the dryer for

5-10 minutes. Hold your hand under the outside exhaust hood to check air movement. If you do not feel air movement, clean exhaust system of lint or replace exhaust vent with heavy metal or flexible metal vent. See the Installation Instructions.

  • Are fabric softener sheets blocking the grille? Use only one fabric softener sheet, and use it only once.
  • Is the exhaust vent the correct length? Check that the exhaust vent is not too long or has too many turns. Long venting will increase drying times. See the Installation Instructions.
  • Is the exhaust vent diameter the correct size? Use 4″ (102 mm) diameter vent material.
  • Is the dryer located in a room with temperature below 45oF (7oC)? Proper operation of dryer cycles requires temperatures above 45oF (7oC).
  • Is the dryer located in a closet? Closet doors must have ventilation openings at the top and bottom of the door. A minimum of 1″ (25 mm) of airspace is recommended for the front of the dryer, and, for most installations, the rear of the dryer requires 5″ (127 mm). See the Installation Instructions.
  • Has an air dry cycle been selected? Select the right cycle for the types of garments being dried.
  • Is the load too large and heavy to dry quickly? Separate the load to tumble freely.
What if there are stains on the load or drum?
  • Was dryer fabric softener properly used? Add dryer fabric softener sheets at the beginning of the cycle. Fabric softener sheets added to a partially dried load can stain your garments.
  • Drum stains are caused by dyes in clothing (usually blue jeans). This will not transfer to other clothing
What if the loads are wrinkled?
  • Was the load removed from dryer at the end of the cycle?
  • Was the dryer overloaded? Dry smaller loads that can tumble freely.
What if there are bad odors?
  • Have you recently been painting, staining, or varnishing in the area where your dryer is located? If so, ventilate the area. When the odors or fumes are gone from the area, rewash and dry the clothing.
  • Is the electric dryer being used for the first time? The new electric heating element may have an odor. The odor will be gone after the first cycle.

-Washer Machine

Clean and Care
What if I have to clean my washer machine?

Keep washer area clear and free from items that would obstruct the flow of combustion and ventilation air.

What if I have to clean the exterior of the washer?
  • Use a soft, damp cloth or sponge to wipe up any spills such as detergent or bleach. Occasionally wipe the outside of your washer to keep it looking new.
What if I have to clean the interior of my washer?
  • Clean your washer interior by mixing 1 cup (250 mL) of chlorine bleach and enough detergent to equal twice the manufacturer’s recommended amount for a normal wash load. Pour this mixture into your washer and run it through a complete cycle using hot water. Repeat this process if necessary.

NOTE: Remove any hard water deposits using only cleaners labeled as washer safe.

Cleaning the liquid fabric softener dispenser (on some models):

  1. Remove dispenser by grasping top with both hands and squeezing, while pushing upward with thumbs.
  2. Rinse dispenser under a warm water faucet, then replace it.

NOTE: If your model has a liquid fabric softener dispenser, do not wash clothes with this dispenser removed. Do not add detergent or bleach to this dispenser; it is for liquid fabric softener only.

What to do about water inlet hoses?

This washer does not include water inlet hoses. Whirlpool Corporation recommends use of Factory Specified Parts. A list of factory specified hoses available for separate purchase are listed on the first page of this user instructions. These hoses are manufactured and tested to meet Whirlpool Corporation’s specifications.

Replace water inlet hoses after 5 years of use to reduce the risk of hose failure. Periodically inspect and replace water inlet hoses if bulges, kinks, cuts, wear, or leaks are found.

When replacing your water inlet hoses, mark the date of replacement on the label with a permanent marker.

Problem Solving
What if the washer is noisy, vibrating, or off balance?
  • Is the floor flexing, sagging, or not level? Flooring that flexes or is uneven can contribute to noise and vibration of the washer. A 3⁄4″ (19 mm) piece of plywood under the washer will reduce the sounds. See the Installation Instructions.
  • Is the washer/dryer level? The washer/dryer must be level. See the Installation Instructions.
  • Is the load balanced? Evenly distribute the load in the washer basket and make sure the height of the load does not exceed the top row of basket holes.
  • Did you completely remove the yellow shipping strap with cotter pins? See the Installation Instructions.
  • Are the gears engaging after the drain and before spin, or is the upper part of agitator clicking during wash? These are normal washer noises.
  • Is the washer gurgling or humming? When the washer drains, the pump will make a continuous humming with periodic gurgling or surging sounds as the final amounts of water are removed. This is normal.
  • The washer basket moves while washing. This is normal.
What if my washer is leaking?
  • Are the fill hoses tight?
  • Are the fill hose gaskets properly seated? Check both ends
  • of each hose. See the Installation Instructions.
  • Is the drain hose properly installed? The drain hose should be secured to the drainpipe or laundry tub. See the Installation Instructions.
  • Is the sink or drain clogged? Sink and drainpipe must be able to carry away 17 gal. (64 L) of water per minute. If sink or drainpipe is clogged or slow, water can back up out of drainpipe or sink. Check household plumbing (laundry tubs, faucets, drainpipe, water pipes) for leaks.
  • Is water splashing off the tub ring? Center the tub before starting the washer.
  • Is water splashing off the load? Evenly distribute the load in the washer basket and make sure the height of the load does not exceed the top row of basket holes. The fill or spray rinses can splash off the load.
What if the dispenser is clogged?
  • Did you follow the manufacturer’s directions when adding fabric softener to the dispenser (on some models)? Measure fabric softener and slowly pour into the dispenser. Wipe up all spills. Dilute fabric softener in the fabric softener dispenser.
What if the washer won't run, fill, rinse or agitate;  washer stops?

Is the power cord plugged into a grounded 3 prong outlet? Plug power cord into a grounded 3 prong outlet.

■ Are you using an extension cord? Do not use an extension cord.

■ Is the indicator on the Cycle Control knob properly lined up with a cycle? Turn the Cycle Control knob to the right slightly and pull to start.

■ Are the water inlet valve screens clogged? Turn off the water and remove inlet hoses from the washer. Remove any accumulated film or particles. Reinstall hoses, turn on water, and check for leaks.

■ Are both the hot and cold water faucets turned on? Turn on the water.

■ Is the water inlet hose kinked? Straighten the hoses.

■ Does the water level seem too low, or does the washer appear to not fill completely? The top of the agitator is much higher than the highest water level. This is normal and necessary for clothes to move freely.

■ Has a household fuse blown, or has a circuit breaker tripped? Replace the fuse, or reset the circuit breaker. If the problem continues, call an electrician.

■ Is the washer in a normal pause in the cycle? The washer pauses for about 2 minutes during certain cycles. Allow the cycle to continue. Some cycles feature periods of agitation and soak.

■ Is the washer overloaded? Wash smaller loads.

■ Is the lid open? The lid must be closed during operation. Washer will not agitate or spin with the lid open.

What if the asher continues to fill or drain; cycle seems stuck?
  • Is the top of drain hose lower than the control knobs on washer? The top of the drain hose must be at least 39″ (990 mm) above the floor. See the Installation Instructions.
  • Does the drain hose fit too tightly in the standpipe, or is it taped to the standpipe? The drain hose should be loose yet fit securely. Do not seal the drain hose with tape. The hose needs an air gap. See the Installation Instructions.
What if the washer won't drain or spin; water remains in washer?
  • Is the drain hose clogged, or the end of the drain hose more than 96″ (2440 mm) above the floor? See the Installation Instructions.
  • Is the lid open? The lid must be closed during operation. Washer will not agitate or spin with the lid open.
  • Is there excessive sudsing? Always measure detergent. Follow manufacturer’s directions. If you have very soft water, you might need to use less detergent.
How do I fix the wash/rinse temperature?
  • Are the hot and cold water inlet hoses reversed? See “Connect Inlet Hoses” in the Installation Instructions
  • Are you washing many loads? As your frequency of loads washed increases, the water temperature may decrease for hot and warm temperatures. This is normal.
Clothing Care
What if the load is too wet ?
  • Did you use the right cycle for the load being washed? Select a cycle with a higher spin speed (if available).
  • Did you wash an extra-large load? A large unbalanced load could result in a reduced spin speed and wet clothes at the end of the cycle. Evenly distribute the load and make sure the height of the load does not exceed the top row of basket holes.
What if there is residue or lint on the load?
  • Did you sort properly? Sort lint givers (towels, chenille) from lint takers (corduroy, synthetics). Also sort by color.
  • Did you overload the washer? The wash load must be balanced and not overloaded. Clothes should move freely. Lint or powdered detergent can be trapped in the load if overloaded. Wash smaller loads.
  • Did you select the correct water level? The water level should be correct for the load size. The load should be under water.
  • Did you use enough detergent? Follow manufacturer’s directions. Use enough detergent to hold the lint in the water.
  • Did you line dry your clothing? If so, you can expect some lint on the clothing. The air movement and tumbling of a dryer removes lint from the load.
  • Was paper or tissue left in the pockets?
  • Is your water colder than 60°F (15.6°C)? Wash water colder than 60°F (15.6°C) may not completely dissolve the detergent.
  • Did you use the proper cycle time and agitation speed for the load? Reducing wash time (duration) and agitation speed are ways to reduce lint.
What if the load is tangled, twisted, or tangled?

Did you unload the washer promptly? Unload the washer as soon as it stops.

■ Did you use the right cycle for the load being washed? Use cycles with shorter wash times and low wash and spin speeds (if available) to reduce wrinkling, tangling, and twisting.

■ Did you overload the washer? The wash load must be balanced and not overloaded. Loads should move freely during washing to reduce wrinkling, tangling, and twisting.

■ Was the wash water warm enough to relax wrinkles? If safe for the load, use warm or hot wash water. Use cold rinse water.

■ Are the hot and cold water hoses reversed? Check that the hot and cold water hoses are connected to the right faucets. A hot rinse followed by spin will cause wrinkling. See the Installation Instructions.

■ Did you wrap items around the agitator? Drop items loosely into the washer. Do not wrap items around the agitator.

What if there are stains in my loads?

Did you properly sort the load? Transfer of dye can occur when mixing whites and colors in a load. Sort dark clothes from whites and lights.

■ Was the wash temperature too low? Use hot or warm washes if safe for the load. Make sure your hot water system is adequate to provide a hot water wash.

■ Did you use enough detergent, or do you have hard water? Use more detergent for washing heavy soils in cold or hard water.

■ Are the hot and cold water hoses reversed? Check that the hot and cold water hoses are connected to the right faucets. See the Installation Instructions.

■ Did you follow the manufacturer’s directions when adding detergent and fabric softener? Measure detergent and fabric softener. Use enough detergent to remove soil and hold it in suspension. Dilute fabric softener and add to the rinse portion of a cycle only. Do not drip fabric softener onto clothes.

■ Is there above average iron (rust) in water? You may need to install an iron filter.

What if my garments are damaged?

Were sharp items removed from pockets before washing? Empty pockets, zip zippers, snap, or hook fasteners before washing to avoid snagging and tearing of load.

■ Were strings and sashes tied to avoid tangling? Straps and strings can easily become entangled in the load, causing strain on seams and tearing.

■ Were items damaged before washing? Mend rips and broken threads in seams before washing.

■ Did you overload the washer? The wash load must be balanced and not overloaded. Loads should move freely during washing.

■ Did you add chlorine bleach properly? Do not pour chlorine bleach directly onto load. Wipe up bleach spills. Undiluted bleach will damage fabrics. Do not place load items on top of the bleach dispenser when loading and unloading the washer (on some models). Do not use more than the manufacturer’s recommended amount for a full load.

■ Did you follow the manufacturer’s care label instructions?

-Oven

Clean and Care
How to prepare the range (oven)?
  • Remove the broiler pan, grid, cookware and bakeware, all cooking utensils, oven racks and aluminum foil and, on some models, the temperature probe from the oven.
  • Use a damp cloth to clean inside door edge and the 1 1⁄2″ (3.8 cm) area around the inside oven cavity frame, being certain not to move or bend the gasket.
  • Remove plastic items from the cooktop because they may melt.
  • Remove all items from the storage drawer.
How does the cycle work?

IMPORTANT: The heating and cooling of porcelain on steel in the oven may result in discoloration, loss of gloss, hairline cracks and popping sounds.

Before self-cleaning, make sure the door is completely closed or the door will not lock and the self-cleaning cycle will not begin.

Once the oven has completely cooled, remove ash with a damp cloth. To avoid breaking the glass, do not apply a cool damp cloth to the inner door glass before it has completely cooled.

To stop the self-cleaning cycle at anytime, press the CANCEL keypad. If the temperature is too high, the oven door will remain locked and “cool” and “locked” will be displayed.

The oven light will not function during the self-cleaning cycle.

How do I use the electronic oven control with adjustable clean time?

The SELF CLEAN self-cleaning cycle is time adjustable between 2 hours 30 minutes and 4 hours 30 minutes in 15-minute increments. Suggested clean times are 2 hours 30 minutes for light soil, and 4 hours 30 minutes for heavy soil. The last 30 minutes of the cycle is for cool down.

How do I steam clean the oven?
IMPORTANT: Do not use oven cleaners or any other additives with Steam Clean.

The Steam Clean feature is designed for light oven cavity bottom cleaning. Use the Steam Clean feature as soon as possible after spills occur. The longer a spill sits and dries in the oven, the more difficult it may be to remove.

Allow the range to cool to room temperature before using the Steam Clean feature. If your oven cavity is above 170°F (77°C), “HOT” will appear in the display and the Steam Clean feature will not activate until it cools down.

  • Remove all racks and accessories from the oven cavity.
  • For best results, pour 10 oz (295 mL) of distilled or filtered water onto the oven bottom.
  • The Steam Clean feature will take a total of 20 minutes. “End” will appear in the display at the end of the cycle.

IMPORTANT: Since the water in the oven bottom is hot, do not open the oven door during the Steam Clean cycle.

Press CANCEL at any time to end the cycle. The display will return to the time of day.

Helpful Hints

■ Once the Steam Clean cycle is complete, remove all remaining water and debris in the bottom of the oven with a sponge or cloth.

■ Wipe any remaining moisture from the oven door interior, oven cavity interior sides, and cooktop.

■ Use a soft brush or nylon scrubber to wipe the oven interior. This may help with more stubborn stains.

■ If any soil remains, run a second Steam Clean cycle to help loosen debris for easier removal.

■ Use the Steam Clean on small spills such as cheese or sauce from pizza or snacks, or drips from casseroles.

■ Food spills containing sugar, proteins or starches may require vigorous scrubbing to remove most of the debris.

■ It is recommended to use distilled or filtered water, as tap water may leave mineral deposits on the oven bottom. Use a cloth soaked with vinegar or lemon juice to remove any mineral deposits that may be left after the Steam Clean cycle.

■ If the oven is heavily soiled, use the Self-Clean cycle. The Steam Clean cycle may be used first to eliminate most of the debris, resulting in a more effective self-clean.
